The latest film of Darling Berlin‘s most productive darling Tom Lass, “Ugly & Blind” (“Blind & Hässlich“), has won the prestigious FIPRESCI prize, which is awarded by the International Federation of Film Critics. The third movie of the promising young auteur Tom Lass, who co-wrote the script, co-produced, directed and played the leading male part, is about a sensitive topic: the emotional confusion of young people. Director Tom Lass takes a closer look, shooting with blind actors and old Berlin buddies, acting the lead himself – paying tribute to a way of life beyond our way of seeing the world.

Darling Berlin’s latest darling “Beat Beat Heart” by director and screenwriter Luise Brinkmann is starting in cinemas all over Germany on April, 27! And this is a movie that’s definitely not to be missed this spring!

On the coastline of Windholm one morning 15 years ago the ocean just disappeared. Since then the emptiness has been raising questions and anxiety. The cause of the phenomenon remains unclear. With a new theory at hand the physicist Micha (28) is one of many young scientists who is trying to get his hands on to one of his university’s rare scholarships to explore the phenomena. After the many years of work he has put into the project he must once again see how a bold idea ends at the doors of the antiquated establishment – he receives a rejection.

At the same time Jana (31), daughter of the institute’s boss and Micha’s former colleague on the project, resurfaces at the university. This doesn’t make the situation any easier for Micha. A year ago she left him and the project and ran off to Portugal. Jana has now returned to put a definite end to her scientific career – but there is something else: Jana has to clarify something with Micha. When Micha decides to take the trip to Windholm to prove his hypothesis despite the rejection and without official permission she joins him.

In Windholm the young scientists are confronted with the remains of a village community that has never been able to overcome their trauma. On the day the ocean disappeared – so did all the children from the village. But have the kids really drowned that day? Their bodies were never found. Micha clings to rational thinking and only the scientific phenomenon is of his concern. But as his measurements take longer than planned the village pulls him deeper and deeper into its spell. Micha meets Hanna (19) the only remaining child. She tries to rebuild the neglected public pool, guides tourists through the village and is convinced that the kids are still out there somewhere. Jana strikes the thought that it is no coincidence that Micha and her have been lead to this place.

Abandoned houses and playgrounds, a small footprint on the empty ground of the ocean, the room of a boy who dreamt of becoming an astronaut – this is where Micha and Jana have to come to terms with their own past and a loss.

The Slamdance Film Festival has unveiled its 23rd annual narrative and documentary feature film competition lineup, and “Beat Beat Heart” by director and screenwriter Luise Brinkmann will celebrate its international premiere at the ‘little brother’ of Sundance. Some words on the film: Daydreaming her way out of a broken heart, Kerstin’s denial as well as her days are shaken up with the arrival of her mother, dealing with her own relationship’s demise. With the great cast of Lana Cooper (“Love Steaks”), Saskia Vester, Till Wonka and others, the movie represents the graduation work of Luise Brinkmann, DOP Mathis Hanspach, editor Maren Unterburger and producer Olivia Charamsa at the ifs (international film school Cologne) and, at the same time, is the first fictional feature film that has been made entirely at the ifs as a graduation film.

The Slamdance Festival, launched in 1995 as an alternative to Sundance, takes place at the Treasure Mountain Inn in Park City, Utah, from Jan. 20 to Jan. 26, and will screen 19 movies: 12 world premieres, three North American debuts, and one U.S. launch.

What a great success for “We Are the Tide (German: Wir sind die Flut”) by Sebastian Hilger, which will be released on on Darling Berlin (DVD and VOD) on February, 24th, 2017! The movie has won the prestigious Audience Award at the Torino Film Festival, which is one of the most important film festivals for young directors worldwide.

Furthermore, the Jury of ‘Torino Sette’ has awarded “We Are the Tide / Wir sind die Flut” with the Achille Valdata Award for Best Film of Torino 34, “…for having used the power of images and a balance of genres to transmit a positive message to the new generations.

Clemens starts a new job as a massage therapist in a luxury hotel. He is shy but sensitive and likes to work with his guests’ energies. The ladies he massages fall for his hands and make advances to him that throw him off balance. Lara, who works in the kitchen, tries it the hard way. She shakes Clemens up and brings him out of his shell. She is the knife, he is the spoon. Opposites attract. She tries to rid him of his fears, he tries to rid her of her addiction. Clemens finds Lara at the beach, carries her home and cleans the vomit from her face. They both drift through Berlin and through their lives, sometimes playful, sometimes obsessively. And even Masha has her issues. While trying to build up a “normal” relationship, both Masha and Oskar reach their limits.

In his house she finds books that are very far from the conventional religion. She gets to know that only penetration into Mirra’s sick subconscious mind and discovery of the true cause of her disease will give her a chance to save her sister. Ayia is ready to go through this terrifying ritual, dive into the depths of the subconscious mind, and face the demons residing there.

Sarah’s MacBook Air flies out of the window when she is throwing an angry fit after an argument with her supposedly best friend. They just spent the night together but he’s not on the same page as her regarding of this new development in their relationship. Stupidly enough, her whole week’s work is on that broken laptop. But maybe the nice guy from the computer repair store can fix it? Or maybe he can fix her life altogether? He is trying to do both and Sarah lets him, because behind her loud and impulsive façade she has a big desire for love. But Sarah wouldn’t be Sarah if she did not test the limits of what this new blooming relationship could take, how many arguments she can have with her father or how much she can party away in Berlin’s night life.

Nachthelle (Bright Night) , by Florian Gottschick:
It’s set out to be an idyllic weekend. Anna and Stefan, Bernd and Marc – two couples spending a few days in the countryside. The expanding open-cast coal mining operation which will soon be swallowing town, woods and meadows, brings them back to their hometown. The place is almost deserted. Nevertheless, the four protagonists are enjoying their visit to the moribund village – when an old debt about to be cashed in starts to invade Anna/s mind. Returning to their hometown seems to have a menacing effect. Anna and Bernd are haunted by nightmares, realities begin to shift. On top of that, Stefan is attracted by the polyamorous relationship of the two other men – a fact used by Marc to play mind games with Anna. She feels her well- structured life slide and then her boyfriend sliding away from her – and only the final confrontation with her former self will allow her a way out.

“Hirschen” is a nice little village. The inhabitants are happy. But one day the factory, where almost everyone works, closes. Most of the inhabitants move away. Only a few people decide to stay, among them the butcher, the major, the mechanic, the doctor and the policeman. They try to find a solution that would give them the possibility to stay in their beloved “Hirschen”. Suddenly, very close to the village, a car crashes into a deer. The village people take very good care of the slightly injured driver. He lives in the butcher’s hotel, the doctor examines him, the mechanic repairs his car, the policeman settles all the papers and the major shows him the whole village, leading the friends to a strange but lucrative idea…

The tragicomic thriller tells the story of Julius Schmitke, played by the marvellous Peter Kurth. In Schmitke ‘s life, there is something lurking behind the bushes. Some mysterious growling from the forest, from deep within… When he is sent to the Czech-German border to repair a similarly unfortunate old windmill, things start to get strange. Very, very strange.
